Catholic Reformation

Savanna Yelling Mr. Waller World History 1 Honors 24 May 2018 This blog is about the Catholic Reformation. It focuses on Jesuits and how they created catholic schools. It also covers what the world would be like without the Reformation. What would happen without the catholic reformation?             The catholic reformation was kicked off by a man named Martin Luther who was not fond of the church abusing its power, he posted the 95 theses on the door of a church. Martin Luther grew up being told to go into law by his family. In 1505 Martin Luther was caught in a near death experience. He was in a storm and prayed to St. Anne to save his life. He swore that if she saved him he would become a monk. Which she did, and he acted accordingly. If he was never in this storm, then he would not have become a monk and started the reformation. Without the catholic reformation the world would be filled with immoral leaders like it once was. The catholic reform

Greek Women (Athens vs. Sparta) from Birth to Womenhood

Image
When you begin studying history what is the first thing you wonder? What's the first thing that pops into your mind? I know when I begin learning about an empire or civilization it crosses my mind, how were the women treated? In today's day and age, we as females are not treated equal so I, personally, always wonder if there was a time in which women were thought of as either superior or equal. Spartans Spartan females had more freedom than all the other women that lived in Greek city-states. Sarah Pomeroy, author of the book  Spartan Women , notices that "we know little about Spartan women, but it is not so readily conceded that we do not actually know much about Spartan men either." (DigitalCommons) (Sutori) Athenians Athens women were treated terribly. Athenians had so much potential. They could become an intelligent scholar, a sharp poet, a strong-minded politician or a creative artist. That is, unless that Athenian was female. Don Nardo, a

Women's Role in Empires

Have you ever pondered why woman are fighting for equal rights year after year? Well the fight for rights has been going on longer than you can imagine. Sexism is something that greatly influenced ancient empires and it is still in full effect today. Despite robust sexism many women rose above this and became leaders while others fell back in the shadows of men. “A woman was like a child in the eyes of the law.” (Bulliet 145) A fight still being battled to this day is the woman’s rights. Woman’s rights, or lack thereof mainly consist of education and business. If a young girl was fortunate enough to receive any education at all, it would be minimal. As far as business goes, unless a female was married in manu (in her husband’s control) she could not own or inherit property. They also were forced to keep a tutela or guardian until their death. It was extremely rare for a woman to run her own business. The others were more likely than not lamp-makers, midwives, hairdressers or in few ca

Fresco Dolphins

Savanna Yelling Mr.Waller World History 1 Honors 1 November 2017     Fresco is the Italian word for "fresh." Fresco painting is painting on a moist surface with pigment mixed with water or a limewater mixture. They are water-based paintings usually done on walls. The paints are created by grindings powder in water. Then they are dried and set with plaster on the wall and are permanent.  Minoan painters adapted this from Greece. Minoans traveled from Crete to Israel to Egypt. Work Cited               Dictionary.com. (2017).  the definition of frescoes .
